Plumbing problem

Why is water dripping from my geyser overflow or discharge pipe?

Some valve discharge can occur during heating, but continuous or heavy flow can indicate a control, pressure or valve problem.

Observe the pattern

Note whether the discharge happens only during heating, continues all day or becomes a steady stream. The pattern is important because different valves perform different safety and control functions.

Do not plug a discharge pipe

Safety and pressure-control discharge points must remain unobstructed. Blocking a pipe because it drips can create a serious hazard and does not correct the cause.

Record the source if possible

Where multiple discharge pipes terminate near each other, photographs can help establish which one is flowing and whether the water is hot or cold.
