Plumbing FAQs

Leaks & Water Damage FAQs

Answers to common questions about plumbing leaks, isolation, water damage and hidden-leak investigation.

What should I do first if a pipe is leaking badly?

If it is safe to do so, isolate the nearest effective water valve, protect people and electrical equipment from the water, move vulnerable contents, and then arrange the repair. Do not force a corroded valve or touch electrical equipment that has been exposed to water.

Does a moving water meter prove there is a hidden leak?

No. It proves that water is being used somewhere during the test period. Toilets, irrigation, tanks and automatic equipment should be ruled out before treating the result as evidence of a concealed leak.

Should a plumber open the wall immediately to find a leak?

Usually it is better to gather evidence and narrow the likely area first. The appropriate investigation depends on the pipe type, building construction and symptoms.

Is damage to ceilings or tiles normally included in a pipe repair quote?

Not necessarily. Access and reinstatement should be stated clearly in the scope because plumbing repair and making good finishes are often separate work items.
