Identify the fitting
A traditional tap and a modern mixer do not use the same repair components. A photograph of the fitting and brand marking can help identify whether a service part is likely to be available.
Check where the water appears
Water from the spout indicates a different fault from water leaking around the handle, body or flexible connectors below the fixture.
Repair versus replacement
Repair makes sense when the fitting is serviceable and parts are available. Replacement may be more economical where the body is damaged, heavily corroded or the correct cartridge cannot be sourced reliably.
