Stop repeated flushing
If the bowl level is rising, do not keep flushing. Close the toilet isolation valve if necessary and keep the fixture out of use until the water level has stabilised.
Check the pattern
Find out whether nearby basins, showers or other toilets are also slow or backing up. Multiple affected fixtures can indicate a downstream drainage problem rather than a blockage inside one toilet.
Report what went down
If an object, excess paper or other material may have entered the toilet, say so. That information can change the clearing method and reduce unnecessary work.
